National Women's Health Week

This week is National Women's Health Week.  A week set aside to help promote women's health and to "empower women to make their health a top priority".

I loved what their website said about making your health a top priority.  For me, that started with choosing to have lap-band surgery.  I knew that I had to take control of my health, and for me that is what I chose to help me get there.  Losing over 80 pounds already has made a huge difference in my health and I feel so good!

It just so happens (total coincidence) that I had my annual well-woman exam scheduled for today and it was the perfect way to celebrate National Women's Health Week!

I hadn't had my yearly exam since I had lap-band surgery (almost a year ago).  It was so amazing to see how far I've come in a year and how much easier it is to go to the doctor now!  When I went before they were never able to get my blood pressure.  They would try several times, get a larger cuff, try on my lower arm and sometimes even then they still weren't able to get it.  Today, they used the standard cuff and had no problems getting it on the first try...and it was normal!  Love it!  I also had to get some blood work done and had no problems finding my vein on the first try.  Can I just tell you how amazing that is?!?  Last year when I went to get blood taken, I had 4 different people try so many times and nobody was able to find a vein.  They had to send me to a blood draw place and even there they had trouble.  No wonder I hated going to the doctor so much!

The bad news is that she did feel something on my uterus and I have to go back in the morning for a sonogram.  She thinks that they are fibroids, but I need to get them checked out.  Hopefully it is no big deal, but we'll see.  Has anyone had them before?

Taking control of my health is not just about losing weight for me, but being healthy inside and out.  Being proactive in having different types of health screenings done, eating healthy, exercising, and being healthy mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well.  I'm really working on becoming healthy in every area of my life.

So please remember to make your health a top priority and do what you need to do to take care of yourself!

  1. Congratulations. I classify these as more NSV's!!! Yes, I had several fibroids. They noted them when I gave birth to my son 20 years ago (I was 26 at the time and I had a C-section, so I guess they saw them and put it in my records) Some grew a bit over time and the only issue I had with them was a more painful cycle each month. Will be thinking of and praying for you.

  2. Thanks for this post! I think sometimes we all need a reminder that ultimately, we decided to lose weight for OUR HEALTH and not just to fit into some ideal size at a store. :) I have not had fibroids but know people who have and it's usually not a big deal. Hoping this is the case for you. ((HUGS))

  5. Yay major major NSV's! Congratulations.

Have had several friends who have had fibroids. I think they are more common in us women who haven't had children yet as we get into our thirties and older. One friend was told it's basically like thick skin on your uterus and unless they get big they just ignore them. Of course, that could just be the NHS. They ignore a lot of things. lol.

  7. sending you lots of prayers, I have heard of lots of women who have had fibroids. It's just good to get them checked out right away. Much easier to fix something that is new. You deserve to feel amazing, you look great!

  8. Nice work on the NSV!! I am VERY happy for you! I'm getting my Annual Exam done in early June...I'm excited to see my doctor's reaction when I get on the scale and show him how much I have lost...Don't worry too much about the fibroids - only when they start to give you problems - they are benign and harmless.
