Vitamins...To Take Or Not???

I've seen several articles recently that question the need to take a daily multi-vitamin.  Experts are saying that we only need to take certain vitamins if we have a deficiency.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/do-you-even-need-vitamins-new-studies-show-possible-risks-experts-offer-some-safety-tips/2011/10/13/gIQAYSKDiL_story.html

I know as lap-band patients we are encouraged to take vitamins since we don't eat as much, but should we be getting vitamins from our food?

Do you take vitamin supplements and if so what do you take?  In the beginning I was taking vitamin supplements regularly, but I have kind of slacked off.  I haven't really noticed a difference by not taking them, but if it's good for my health, I definitely want to continue.  What do y'all think?

  1. I don't know! I am up in the air as well! I notice no difference in how I feel at all when I am on them. The only time I did is when I was lacking iron...and that wasn't from WLS. I do feel I am eating WAY less veggies then I have in my whole life. Less carbs too but I was never much of a carb girl anyway! I am curious to see what my next blood work says!

  2. The only difference for me is - I usually end up going over my sugar intake when I take them. No bueno!

  3. I take two "Vitaband" supplements a day...I've also heard the latest news, but I figure it's better to get something in than not!

  4. I take a one-a-day prenatal vitamin and I frequently get B12 shots. I can really tell a difference from the B12 shots. I love the prenatal bc it does wonders for my hair and nails.

  5. I take a daily, biotin for my hair and an iron supplement. I was low on iron at my last appt.

  7. I'm on the fence as well. I never took vitamins really before surgery (not consistently) but now I feel obligated bc of my surgeon. I'm curious to see what my bloodwork will say (getting it drawn Monday). There's something so artificial about chewing up a vitamin but now I'm getting no where the amount of veggies I used to eat...or fruit or dairy, so I figure I probably need them now. Maybe that will change as I can eat more.

  8. I do have vitamins to take - now whether or not I remember to take my multivitamin and others is another story!! Whatever "they" say about vitamins helping memory is bunk!!

I take them a few days a week though..

  9. Interesting topic. My doc (not surgeon) recently teamed up with a leading breast cancer surgeon who was part of a group who worked on 'Juice Plus' supplements. One is veggies (can't remember how many are in a pill) and one is fruit (again, can't remember how many are in a pill). I've been taking them and mentally feel good about it (knowing that I'm not having ANY fruit) and almost no veggies during my daily food intake. I think I'm still too new in banded life to be of real help in answering htis question. My surgeon was 'high' on Nutrilife (or something like this).

  10. I take a multi-vitamin, prenatal, zinc (for my acne), Biotin (for my hair loss & regrowth), magnesium Oxide (for tummy issues). I should be taking calcium supplements daily but haven't, Ooops!

  11. I was never good about taking vitamins but I've been pretty religious about it since being banded. I take a vita-something gummy every day. I don't know about the benefits but I don't think it hurts anything to take them so I'm OK with it.

  12. I only take b12 as that is the only one I am lacking in. I am not good with taking pills, so I will ONLY take what I have to! I do drink v8 fusion though. I use that as a source of vitamins.
